ADVbasics: Our Commitment to a Safe and Respectful Experience

ADVbasics is dedicated to creating and delivering high-quality Training & Tour experiences led by field-tested instructors and guides. We strive to foster environments where all participants, staff, and sponsors feel safe and respected. We understand that our realistic, hands-on training approach is essential for skill development but can be challenging for some individuals. Our goal is to balance effective training with the well-being of everyone involved.

Training Scenarios and Participant Well-being

  • Realistic Simulations: Our training utilizes scenarios and anecdotes that mimic real emergencies to help participants learn vital skills. These simulations can be demanding.
  • Personal Safety: We prioritize the mental and physical safety of all participants and staff. Participants are never required to take part in a scenario if they feel uncomfortable doing so for personal health or safety reasons.
  • Communication: We strongly encourage participants to communicate privately with an instructor if they need to opt out of or modify their participation in any scenario or topic. If speaking directly with an instructor isn’t feasible, please inform a representative from your organization so the message can be relayed.
  • Skill Development: These simulations offer valuable opportunities to practice skills and decision-making for real-life situations.

Conduct and Physical Interaction

  • Hands-on Practice: Some physical contact is necessary during skill practice sessions to effectively learn and refine techniques. We recognize this may be unfamiliar for some.
  • Respectful Interaction: All interactions, especially during hands-on practice, must remain professional and respectful. Rude, harassing, or inappropriate behavior or comments are unacceptable, even if intended as a joke. Concerns about the level of physical contact should be raised with an instructor or supervisor.

Expectations for a Positive Environment

  • Mutual Respect: Our courses bring together individuals from many different backgrounds and perspectives. We expect all participants, instructors, and staff to interact respectfully, fostering a professional learning atmosphere where everyone feels welcome. Comments or actions that disrespect, offend, or threaten others based on their background, beliefs, or identity will not be tolerated.
  • Clear Communication: We aim for clear, respectful, and effective communication. In the context of adventure activities and emergency scenarios, it’s sometimes necessary to discuss medical conditions or factors relevant to safety factually and professionally, regardless of an individual’s personal identity. We encourage participants to communicate any specific needs or concerns related to identity to instructors to ensure a supportive and safe learning experience. Our team is committed to using considerate language and continuously improving communication practices.
  • Participant Responsibility: Participants share responsibility for maintaining a safe environment by following instructor guidance, adhering to safety protocols, and acting considerately towards others.

Accessibility and Feedback

  • Accommodation: ADVbasics instructors and guides make reasonable efforts to be aware of and accommodate participants with specific needs to ensure safe and effective participation. Please communicate any necessary accommodations in advance if possible.
  • Continuous Improvement: We welcome constructive feedback. Please feel free to speak with your instructors or guides if you believe language or behavior could be improved to better foster a positive and effective learning space for everyone. We are all learning and aim to continuously improve.
